Quick fix for the Nexus 5 frequent restart issue or related issues after Android upgrade

If you have upgraded your phone from android kitkat to lollipop recently, there are chances that your Nexus 5 runs into issues like restart on its own every now & then and its a restart loop most of the times. Another issue can be, the power button gets over sensitive, even touching the button lightly switches off your device.
I had the same issues and my nexus was already out of warranty, so there was no way to get it replaced by the google. I had to go through a lot of tips, tricks, support & fixes until i finally got the issue fixed.
Before i performed the upgrade to android 5.0, i had all these applications like CM security, Clean master, True Caller installed and running fine on my android kitkat. But soon after the upgrade, my nexus started acting erratically.

Now, let me share all the possible solutions/fixes which might save you from the hassles of googling around the internet and calling the LG or the Google tech support.

Change the lock type

The quickest and widely effective fix that might work for your device is changing the lock type. Remove the pattern or pin lock if you are using, simply use the password or swipe lock. This small change fixes the issue for most of the devices.

Check for available updates

In case, the quick fix did not work for you, check if any system update or application update is available, make sure your phone is up-to-date in every aspect.

Clear the partition cache

If step 2 doesn't solve the issue, try clearing the partition cache from the recovery mode.

To wipe the cache partition, follow these steps:
  • Back up all necessary data & turn off the device. There are lots of ways to backup the data, most of your important data can be synced to the google servers & for rest, use some 3rd party applications with good ratings.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Volume Down and Power keys at the same time for about 5 seconds.
  • An image of an Android lying on its back will appear.
  • Press the Volume Up/Down key until "Recovery mode" appears on the screen.
  • Press the Power key to select "Recovery mode"
  • An image of an Android with a red triangle will appear.
  • While holding down the Power key, tap the Volume Up key.
  • The Android System Recovery screen will appear. Release all keys.
  • Use the Volume keys to scroll to wipe data cache partition and press the Power key to select.
  • Once the wiping partition cache is complete, you will have the option to reboot.
This activity should solve the restart issue.

Safe mode is your friend, remove the problematic applications

If above activity doesn't solve the issue, you might boot into the safe mode to verify whether any of the third party application is creating the issue. To boot into the safe mode, press the power key until you get the Power off option. Then, press on Power off option for a while and you will be prompted for Reboot in safe mode.
Only the official applications remain active in the safe mode, rest third party applications are automatically disabled. Lets say, you find out the phone is working perfect in the safe mode which obviously means that you are now required to remove some third party application that you are not really sure of.
In this case, remove the following applications completely from your device: CM Security or any kind of antivirus you are using, Clean master or any similar application, Battery doctor or any such battery saving application, Truecaller.

Reset your Nexus 5 to factory settings

There are cases when the device even reboots in the safe mode like that of mine. Any of the above fixes did not work for my nexus 5. Now, the only fix that can actually work for your device is resetting to the factory settings. Make sure you backup all the data on your phone before performing the reset.
Reset can be performed in 2 ways, from the settings & from the recovery mode. I suggest you do it from the recovery mode as its more effective. This article will help you through the reset of your Nexus.
Now, that your device is all new, a lot of disk space & memory freed up, it will function as it normally should. But the main thing that needs to be kept in mind is, avoid installing the applications i have mentioned above. It will be better if you immediately clear the cache partition as soon as you are done with the factory reset. This fixed the issue for me.

Well, these were the safest ways to fix the nexus 5 restart issue. In the case, when any of the above solutions fails to fix, you still have two options left to go with. First is, take the paid technical support from LG as your phone is already out of warranty or if you are not really the paying kind of person, just root your device and flash with kitkat, the previous android version you had. This will definitely fix any issue caused by the android upgrade.

If you need any kind of suggestions on any of the solutions provided, please leave a comment and expect a quick reply.
